 | | | | | Lech Janerka appeared on the Polish rock scene in the late 70’s. With his wife - Bożena Janerka – he performed at festivals of student songs. In 1979 he founded the band Klaus Mitffoch and released only one record with them. The album, which was self titled, is considered the most important record in the history of Polish pop.
The album’s intensity of expression is as strong as that of punk rock but the range of melody and harmony is far broader. The lyrics were connected to the realities of The People’s Republic of Poland in the 1980’s. The album is full of veiled critiques of the regime and inspiration to resist. Music magazine polled journalists who rated it the best album in 30 years. The readers of Only Rock magazine voted it the best album of the 80’s.
After the band’s breakup in 1986, Janerka released a solo album titled Underwater History. Calmer musicaly and lyricaly, the album received much critical success. Almost all the songs made the Polish hit lists, including „Konstytucje”, „Niewole”, „Ta zabawa nie jest dla dziewczynek”).
In the following years he released several albums, with less spectacular success but they sealed his reputation as an original independent artist on the magins of the Polish rock scene. He has often changed the character of his music. For example the album „Bruhaha” was full of Wojtek Seweryn’s guitar riffs while the record „Ur” was very far from the rock esthetic. Among Janerka’s fans there is the opinion that the level of music on his following albums left something to be desired, as opposed to lyrics which became deeper and more poetic.
In 2002 Janerka recorded a song that will be used to promote Wroclaw as the city of EXPO 2010. The political and artistic elite of Wroclaw, as well as the bishop and the chief of police, took part in the recording. The event was widely celebrated in the city but many of his fans were puzzled by what they took to be selling out.
Lech Janerka is the author of soundtracks of three movies – „Chcę mi się wyć” by Jacek Skalski”, „Obcy musi fruwać” by Wieslaw Saniewski and „Czyż nie dobija się konia?” by Maciej Żurawski. He also appeared in Przemyslaw Wojcieszek`s film, „Glosniej od bomb” as the priest Wojciech.
