In his book ‘Contemporary Piano Styles’, jazz educator John Mehegan writes that “dealing with solo piano is surely a moment of truth for any jazz pianist”.
Lee Sloan (USA) is one of only a few pianists on today’s scene who undertakes the challenge, gaining recognition for his solo concerts of entirely improvised music.
Born in the United States into a musical family, Lee began private lessons at the age of five.
He attended the Berklee College, Boston, and studied with Josef Raiff at The Juilliard School, and with Grace Castagnetta, a pupil of Josef Hofmann.
While living in New York, Lee gave a series of improvisational solo concerts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, was the house pianist at ‘Sweet Basil’s’ in Greenwich Village, and played alongside Warren Vache at ‘Bechet’s’.
He took up residence in London, and appeared regularly in ensemble with bassist Peter Ind at ‘The Bass Clef’, and as a soloist at ‘Pizza on the Park’, ‘Zanzibar’, ‘Café Pelican’, and ‘The 606 Club’.
Lee’s concert in Manggha will be his second appearance in this year’s Cracow Autumn Jazz Festival – his previous performance was at jazz club Alchemia, in quartet with Mikolaj Trzaska, Mark Tokar and Rick Hollander.
Lee will appear in a concert of solo piano improvisations at Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology, on December 5th, 2008.
